Business Challenge
In recent years, the TxDOT has experienced a significant increase in demand for its services. Simultaneously, there has been an increased demand for visibility into Project performance. TxDOT required a solution to support 600 project managers and 7200 projects.
Prior to partnering with IMS, TxDOT used Primavera P3 in conjunction with Project Tracker to provide visibility into projects. Together these tools did not provide adequate information on an enterprise basis. The critical issues affecting TxDOT were; the need to provide the following capabilities to their customers: effective resource utilization, effective project scheduling, effective construction cost management, timely and accurate project status information, shared data access, and effective and consistent reporting of project information across the organization. The need for an advanced Enterprise Project Management solution was apparent.
Solution
IMS was engaged to provide professional project management and implementation services for TxDOT. IMS executed a strategy that defined the organizational structure and approach. IMS spent several months working with the implementation team at TxDOT to integrate the Enterprise Project Management software into daily operations. A thorough needs assessment was completed prior to the software implementation to improve and accomplish:
- project visibility
- effective resource utilization
- improve effective project scheduling
- construction cost management
- timely and accurate project status information
- shared data access
- effective and consistent reporting of project information across the organization
Impact
IMS overcame the many challenges presented by TxDOT, including a disparate workforce and work practices that varied by geographical location. IMS has trained 600 project managers, and is currently assisting TxDOT in the migration of their 7200 projects into P6. As the TxDOT engagement nears its completion, management is beginning to see that their objectives are being met.
