Business Challenge

Virgin Galactic has historically let each project team manage in their own way, with little uniformity among the teams. They have used Microsoft Project to manage their projects with no visibility into the way scarce resources are allocated across the enterprise. The information generated by each team was not as timely or reliable as management needed to make programmatic decisions. In most cases project information was organized into silos for each functional organization, with little interrelationships among the silos. Management came to understand they needed a solution to these problems.

Solution

IMS was engaged as a partner to help provide uniformity in project management processes, to implement Primavera P6 EPPM, to assist in migrating existing projects from MS Project to Primavera P6 EPPM, to provide schedulers to support the various projects, and to provide ProjectInfoCenter Executive Dashboards.
The Scope of Work included preparing a Project Controls Manual, with supporting desk instructions, preparing and presenting training for P6 and Team Member, providing Project Controls consulting support to the various programs, and supplying schedulers to assist in managing the programs. Effecting the development of valid and timely Earned Value information has been a central theme of the effort.

Impact

Virgin Galactic is using P6 to plan and manage programs using project oriented Work Breakdown Structures (WBS). Functional information is integrated within the context of the WBSs. An improved degree of uniformity in project management processes has been achieved, and is progressing as new programs are incorporated. IMS schedulers are engaged and integrated within the project teams to provide support and reinforce the business processes. IMS continues to play a role in continuously improving the business process and is in the process of implementing ProjectInfoCenter dashboards.
